Eric Clapton didn't leave Memphis empty-handed.
While here, he picked up five custom made guitars from Strings and Things.
Chris Lovell an Charlie Lawing, co-owners of
Strings and Things, talked with Clapton after his appearance in Memphis
Thursday night.
"Duck Dunn, who plays bass for Clapton,
had been telling him about our guitars for a long time. When he met my
partner after the concert, he said he had heard a lot about us. We were
flabbergasted. Charlie figured he didn't know us from beans, " Lovell
said. "Clapton came in to our Union store about 11 a.m. Friday and
stayed until about 2 p.m." Clapton played before store customers about
45 minutes.
"He's just a real nice, unassuming type
of guy. We told him we'd like to have him playing our guitars. He said
after playing them and hearing them, he would be glad to endorse them.
Then we approached him about building an Eric Clapton model and he really
liked that. We were blown away because we thought he was signed up (with
someone else)," Lovell said.
